Yesterday evening, I was seated in front of my TV set AND my laptop, trying to put together some materials I was presenting for a telecon at work. As usual, I had the TV set on for distraction, and decided that HBO would be the channel of my distraction. They usually reran old movies that I had already seen, or was too old to be relevant to me. Only rarely did I get a really good movie that I had missed and wanted to watch (and note, they are heavily edited for the television audience and time constraints).

Alas, on came Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and work was forgotten. I had seen it on the big screen before, and strangely enough, didn’t find it that great. However, seeing it again on HBO, I realised I enjoyed and sucked up every bit of fun there was. My personal favourite was when Ms Little Rich Spoilt Brat got dragged into the incinerator because the squirrels gave the verdict that she was a bad nut after knocking on her head a couple of times.

It was great computer graphics where Willy Wonka’s “helpers” was obviously a single man that they duplicated many times to form a song and dance routine each time one of the kids who were touring the Chocolate factory because they had won a golden ticket got “removed”, in various ways.

In the end, Charlie is the only child that was left and thus the winner and heir to the Wonka Chocolate Factory. However, he gives it a pass as he would need to leave his beloved grandparents and parents if he were to take up Willy’s offer. All ends well as children’s stories do, with a morale at the end. Charlie ends up inheriting the chocolate factory after all, without need to leave his family and Willy reunites with his estranged dentist father. As for the story morale - I would take a guess that all good things happens to good people.

I was totally absorbed into the story and laughed at all the silly puns. It was a good relaxer and I was able to get back to my work, refreshed albeit stretched for time. While I ended up working until past 12, I felt as if I had snuck into a cinema and did something for an evening instead of boring work, which has occupied all my evenings ever since I returned from the Tibet trip in mid-August. So if you are a Johnny Depp fan and need something consisting of pure silly entertainment to cheer you up, you should make a trip to the video store and get a copy of Charlie.
